The Evolution of the RPG Genre and Its Impact on Game Design

0

RPG Tactical Skills
A huge part of game design is taking cues from iconic titles over the years. While some game studios pop out clones of famous games, like the ill-fated, infamous string of so-called GTA-killers (Saint’s Row, Crackdown, etc.), the real mastery of effective game design is implementing tried and true methods to enhance your already existing project.

When it comes to RPGs, there is a gold mine worth exploring. Especially with some of the best tactical RPGs. The 1990s and 2000s alone had a slew of fantastic, influential tactical RPGs that added so much to the genre.

Games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force, Ogre Battle, Fallout, and the Megami Tensei series molded the RPG genre into more than just dungeon crawling with your friends.

Let’s see which games offer the most influential mechanics and design elements to enhance your own game design skills.

History and Game Design

Role-playing video games have been around since before widespread video game consoles, games, and more. Likewise, Games on PC and on PlayStation leaned heavily into the role-playing genre in the 1990s.

In tactical RPGs, players need to use a mix of strategy, tactical combat (usually tactical turn-based combat), and win battles using brain power as well as different player classes. Many games would have the game paused between moves or upon encountering an enemy to best plan out their attack.

Will you move your knight to the front, to conquer the strongest enemy? What will you do with your archer? Your healer? Sometimes it’s pretty straightforward, but other times you’re going to need to think about your actions carefully.

For example, in Fallout, the game uses strictly turn-based combat. The player has AP, or action points, that allow players to act in certain ways. The player could choose to walk, attack, or flee.

How the Western PC Changed the Genre

Western tactical RPGs like Baldur’s Gate, Fallout 1 & 2, Torment: Planescape, and more were the role-playing game renaissance that paved the way for even more great, innovative games of their ilk. They combined great storytelling, character customization, and cohesive roleplaying elements to stand out amongst their contemporaries.

Three games, in particular, showed that they were more than mere time-killing games through things like in-depth strategic combat, class-based gameplay, and more.

Tactical RPGs Every Developer Should Study

While RPGs on modern consoles and PCs are directly shaped by many of their forebears, some of the best strategy RPGs come from places like the mid-1990s. There’s a heavy concentration of cRPGs and JRPGs that have made role-playing

Final Fantasy Tactics

RPG - Final Fantasy Tactics

  • Squaresoft
  • Sony Computer Entertainment
  • 1997

Final Fantasy Tactics is a wonderful tactical RPG developed for the original PlayStation. In the original Final Fantasy Tactics, you take on the role of a hero in the fictional kingdom of Ivalice, where a fierce war is brewing.

The isometric view and heavy emphasis on planning your battles shifted the original focus of Final Fantasy’s turn-based combat into an intricate game of video game chess. Each character class has its strengths and weaknesses.

The sheer perfection in the tactical RPG balance between characters is the feature worth mentioning. A game’s balance is exactly what every designer should strive for over stunning visuals and good frame rates.

While it’s no easy feat to purchase Final Fantasy Tactics, you can purchase Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions on Sony PSP. This is a fantastic continuation of the Final Fantasy Tactics games and worth picking up.

Fallout 1 & 2

RPG - Fallout 1 & 2

  • Black Isle Studios
  • Interplay Productions
  • October 10, 1997, October 29, 1998

Fallout introduced gamers to a genuinely unique, grim, and darkly humorous set of titles in the 1990s. Fallout has a sterling reputation among gamers for its most recent titles like Fallout 4 and Fallout: New Vegas.

However, before the flashy execution of the V.A.T.S. targeting system, there was the simple ability to target body parts of your enemy.

This made Fallout even more of a standout tactical RPG. The simple targeting of various limbs and body parts added not only a layer of immersion but overall strategy. You might not be able to land a headshot on a raider, but you could cripple their legs, effectively rendering them immobile. This makes enemy encounters thrilling, even if it is a minor enemy.

While the original Fallouts have shown their age, they are still a lot of fun to play. Game designers should always study a game like Fallout for some unique and effective game mechanics, like simply targeting limbs. Its subsequent entries, and games like Wasteland 2, have adopted it.

You can find all the Fallout games on Steam.

Baldur’s Gate

RPG - Baldur's Gate

  • Interplay Entertainment
  • December 21, 1998

With a new entry for the tactical RPG series on the horizon, the influence of Baldur’s gate and other cRPGs from the 1990s has never been more important.

Baldur’s gate transports you to a medieval fantasy setting within the Dungeons and Dragons universe. It’s a tale as old as time: you, a humble hero, are caught up in a battle of good against evil.

Throughout the game, you gather various, unique party members and all of the different character classes. There are mages, wizards, paladins, and more.

Baldur’s Gate was fantastic at pausing combat and allowing you to map out the different moves for all of your characters at once. You’d be surprised how long it can take, especially in a boss battle, to plan out a plan of attack properly.

However, Baldur’s Gate made this planning phase a fun and sometimes tense part of the game.

You can find Baldur’s Gate on Steam.

Conclusion

Overall, studying up on the best tactical RPGs is a benefit to game design. You can see evolving mechanics through the years and the effects tactical RPGs like Fallout, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Baldur’s Gate had on current games.

Video Game Bots: Static vs. Dynamic, Bot vs. NPC, and the Future of Bots

0

Video Game Bots
As a youngster in the early 2000s, I had scored a copy of Unreal Tournament. I played it for hours, feeling superior to everyone I beat. However, I soon found out that I wasn’t even connected to an Internet server.

I had been playing against AI game bots.

Needless to say, I was fooled. The AI bots’ behaviors in ‘online’ games of the Unreal Tournament were so human-like. So what’s the difference between bot and humans in games? Let’s break it down.

What Are Video Game Bots?

Quite simply, video game bots are instances of artificial intelligence (AI) that play a game instead of a player. Game bots are present in nearly every multiplayer game, from Halo to MMORPGs.

Game bots perform various tasks, everything from acting as the player would or NPCs doing farm work. Artificial intelligence has come a long way from the days of Pong.

There are various types of game bots as well.

Types of Bots

Different Kinds of Bots
Let’s outline three different types of bots.

Static Game Bots

Static game bots need a lot of assistance to act appropriately. These game bots are ones that have a relatively small agency to move on their own accord. They usually exist to serve out a linear function, like follow directions or trade with the player at a shop.

Dynamic Game Bots

Dynamic game bots can partake in learning the layouts of levels, learning new strategies, and more. The behavior of these bots can be found most in a popular game like Counter-Strike.

Both

There are even game bots that engage in both static and dynamic behaviors. Counter-Strike, for example, uses both static waypoints and dynamic actions and behaviors in online games to act more realistic.

There are bots that both take part in completing repetitive tasks associated with smaller game details and undertake quest goals.

Bot vs Non-Player Character

Video Game Bot vs NPC
There may be a small misconception between a game bot vs. an NPC. NPCs, non-player characters, never play the game. Bots, on the other hand, are modeled off of the player to create actual gameplay. NPCs like those in MMORPGs never aim to mimic the player’s behavior in online play.

Think of NPCs more like set pieces. They are there to populate the game world but not overtly interact with its elements.

Other Examples

Game bots aren’t the only bots you interact with. Think of when you accessed an app or a website and started chatting with someone. That’s a bot programmed to perform specific tasks through the power of artificial intelligence.

Many bots in that position use learned communication through analyzed data and information through things like machine learning.

How to Create Bots

Make your own video game bot
You can actually create your own bots for games, online activity, and more. But how?

There are a few things to consider before creating a bot. It will most likely come down to knowing a programming language like Python or C++.

Along with programming expertise, developers need to create macros that serve as a general map of behavior for the game bots. These allow you to program bots to do basically anything you want them to. Whether it’s a repetitive task, or something more complex, macros will be your lifeline here.

However, one obstacle that may be a little hairy is skirting around a game’s bot detection system. Since we want a bot to act identically to a human player, you need to be meticulous with your programming.

Your method, process, and approach depending on what you want your bot to do. Do you want them to act in static ways, dependent on your lines of code? Or do you want them to follow you around and assist as a cooperative player would?

It’s a bit controversial to use bots in games to your own ends. Collecting resources in different areas can be considered cheating, and many games have bot detection and algorithms designed to sniff out suspicious behavior.

While many of the bot’s behavior rests on your coding skills and overall goals, you also need to be careful. For example, if you were to run into server-side detection, you could get banned from a game.

The Future of Bots

Game bots and artificial intelligence are only getting more impressive. Through things like a machine and deep learning, game bots will be nearly indistinguishable from real players. They allow for players short on fellow players to still experience the game. The chances are that you won’t even want human teammates in the future.

The trajectory of deep learning regarding AI is impressive, as exhibited through Tesla’s self-driving cars and more.

Either way, they’re only going to engage in more effective communication, complete more complex tasks, and maybe even fool everyone.

No Man’s Sky

Long-lasting video games - No Man's Sky

No Man’s Sky was one of the most highly anticipated games ever released in recent memory. Its 2016 launch was met with anger, frustration, and disbelief.

The game seemed like it wasn’t even finished, and all of the promises of cool stuff seemed to go up in smoke. There were glitches, no good multiplayer, boring worlds, and more terrible gameplay aspects.

However, since 2016, the game developers have been putting in extra effort and manpower to transform this once disappointing game into a winner. And guess what? They did.

The current build of No Man’s Sky is an addictive, casual, and fun adventure through the stars. Players can play with others and build bases on other planets. While there are still some bugs and glitches, the game has grown by leaps and bounds. Also, the developers have made every significant update over the years completely free.

I can’t recommend No Man’s Sky highly enough to exhibit what it means to be a long-lasting game that’s well worth your time.

Level Up Your Gaming Operating System

The Best OS For Gaming
With each passing year, new and impressive games and game consoles are improving by leaps and bounds. Just check out the difference between a game released for the PS4 in its launch year to the Ghost of Tsushima. It’s night and day.

And that is just regarding video game consoles, not different gaming OS.

What is the best OS for gaming? Let’s take a look at what each major one has to offer.

What Are Operating Systems?

Operating systems, or OS, are the various system software that runs programs, runs hardware, and acts as a framework for whichever computer you are using.

For example, all Macs use macOS, Apple’s patented operating system. Likewise, Microsoft uses various versions of Windows, with the newest being Windows 10.

Operating systems have predefined aspects like memory usage, CPU type, and more. On the surface, you can see the stark differences between something like Ubuntu and macOS.

If you’re only concerned with the cosmetics of your operating system, then you only need to concern yourself with the user interface and user experience. But what if you want to boot up something like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War or Assassin’s Creed Valhalla? You’re going to need something more powerful than a rinky-dink operating system.

While they aren’t precisely like consoles, some operating systems are better optimized for gaming than others. Let’s see which ones are the best operating systems for gaming.

What Is the Best OS For Gaming?

Here we will list the major operating systems, their various specs, features, and if they’re ideal for a gamer.

Windows 10

Windows 10 OS
Windows 10 is the latest version of Microsoft Windows. As such, it is a much-improved iteration of the OS that brings together a few unique aspects.

For example, PC players can fully integrate games with Xbox LIVE, have full controller support, and more. Windows 10 is perfect for those new to PCs and PC gaming.

Windows 10 has improved upon nearly every aspect of Windows operating systems and is easily one of the best iterations of Microsoft software since the glory days of Windows XP. With the way things are going, we could easily see Windows 10 being the default Microsoft operating system for over a decade.

After five years, Windows 10 is on over a billion different Microsoft devices.

Price

Windows 10 Home costs $139. This is perfect for PC users stuck in the past to finally catch up with the times. There’s nothing inherently wrong with past operating systems.

Still, crucial support from Microsoft could eventually be cut off from you after several years as the company shifts the focus to their newest OS. If you are upgrading to Windows 10, you should ensure that your CPU, GPU, and RAM are all updated in some way, as this optimizes your PC for excellent gaming potential.

Since Windows 10 is so far spread in the PC world, prices vary by processor and PC model. You could snag a budget gaming desktop or an Alienware gaming laptop worth thousands of dollars.

Specs

It doesn’t take much to actually run Windows 10, and it comes preinstalled on every Microsoft device.

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC.
  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit.
  • Hard Disk Space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS.
  • Graphics Card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver.
  • Display: 1024 x 600 or above.

Display Features

Windows 10 offers a lot of customization and tweaking of display features. If you want to change the resolution, text size, or even the color scheme of your layout, there are a few things you can do.

Primarily, you would want to press Start, go to Settings, System (a picture of a gear), then Display. From here, you can choose your scale and layout, display resolution, display orientation, and set up dual monitors if you have them.

Performance

The performance of Windows 10 is pretty reliable, regardless of graphics card or CPU. Again, it depends on the computer model you use. You could have an impressive MSI gaming laptop, an Intel Core i7, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics card. Or maybe you have a Dell computer with a limited GPU, CPU, and hard drive but superb usability.

Either way, Windows 10 is excellent for gaming and is far and away, the champ when it comes to the best gaming OS.

Windows 8

Microsoft Windows OS
Windows 8 was the Microsoft operating system before the current one. As such, it isn’t as robust as Windows 10 in a few ways. For example, on Windows 8, you don’t have the full version of DirectX available to you. DirectX 12 is only suited for the newest operating system.

However, game companies and developers still develop games that are compatible with Windows 8, so if you’re nervous about it becoming obsolete, fret not.

Keep in mind that Microsoft and game developers theoretically could stop support for Windows 8 in the future. While there are no plans for this on the horizon, obsoletion is a genuine possibility.

Price

The price for computer users who want Windows 8.1 will have to pay starting at $119.99 to have access to it. If you buy a current PC, it will have Windows 10 preinstalled, so we don’t recommend outright purchasing a different, older OS, as Windows 10 is optimized for gaming.

Specs

The minimum specs to run Windows 8.1 are:

  • CPU: Various
  • CPU Speed: 1 GHz or faster processor.
  • RAM: 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • Video Card: DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver.
  • Pixel Shader: 2.0.
  • Free Disk Space: 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Display Features

The main improvement upon operating systems before Windows 8 was the emphasis on supporting the use of multiple monitors. Of course, you have all of the great standard options of changing the text size, scale of everything, resolution, and more.

Performance

For now, the performance on PCs operating with Windows 8 performs well. The only real downside to using Windows 8 is that specific graphical programs like DirectX can’t progress past a particular version.

For example, you can’t use DirectX12 on Windows 8. Other than that, you can skate by playing pretty impressive games.

macOS

Mac Operating System
Die-hard fans of Apple still have a dog in the race. While Macs have always prioritized fantastic design, optimization, and sleek user interfaces for things like graphic design, they have become more gamer-friendly.

Let’s look at some of the critical aspects of macOS and see if it holds up to the high scrutiny of gaming requirements.

Price

The only way to get a hold of macOS is to buy a Mac computer. Whether it is the MacBook Air or iMac Pro, you can only use macOS on Mac products. With this in mind, the price you pay for macOS depends entirely on the Mac product you buy.

For example, it might cost you considerably more to use macOS on a MacBook Pro than a MacBook Air. This makes buying for the operating system a bit easier than with Windows, as your choices are more limited in a good way.

Specs

Let’s look at the technical specifications for an iMac, the standard desktop model for Apple computers.

  • Display: 21.5-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display.
  • Processor: 2.3GHz. 2.3GHz dual‑core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz.
  • Price: $1,099. $1,299.
  • Memory: 8GB of 2133MHz DDR4 memory.
  • Storage: 1 256GB.
  • Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640.
  • Video: Support and Camera. FaceTime HD camera.
  • Audio: Stereo speakers.

Display Features

This is where macOS really outperforms nearly every competitor. Apple prides itself on an excellent user interface, and it shows.

The resolutions you can access with macOS are fantastic, sleek, and clear. You have brightness automation, scale and layout tweaking, Night Shift mode, transparency and contrast settings, and more.

Performance

Macs perform beautifully. Even with games, macOS makes the most of its world-class hardware and software.

Since Macs don’t precisely prioritize gaming, the GPU, graphics cards, and other crucial gaming aspects are put on the back burner. If you are looking for a great operating system for widespread use, macOS is perfect. However, it isn’t ideal for hardcore gaming.

Ubuntu

Linux Ubuntu OS
One of the most famous operating systems for Linux, Ubuntu is slowly making inroads in the gaming world. Out of the three central operating systems, Windows, Mac, and Linux, Ubuntu is perhaps the weakest.

However, game support is ever-growing, and possibly Linux and Ubuntu will provide a safe harbor for hardcore gamers in the future. There are other aspects of Linux, like Lakka, which can directly emulate console games.

Ubuntu, however, doesn’t have that same power.

Price

Following the Linux example, Ubuntu has always been free to download and operate. This is great for those who want something different than Windows. The open framework allows for unique and exciting new computing experiences.

Specs

  • Processor: 2 GHz dual-core processor.
  • Memory: 4 GiB RAM (system memory)
  • Storage: 25 GB of hard-drive space (or USB stick, memory card, or external drive but see LiveCD for an alternative approach)
  • Graphics: VGA capable of 1024×768 screen resolution.
  • Either a CD/DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media.
  • Internet access is helpful.

Display Features

There are a few unique as well as standard display features with Ubuntu. You can change the ‘temperature’ of the screen, the lock screen background, screen brightness, and dual monitor support.

Performance

Once again, Ubuntu isn’t optimized for gaming. While you can access individual titles, it isn’t recommended that you buy and download heavy-duty titles like the newest Assassin’s Creed or Watch Dogs: Legion.

What it does, it does well. It just can’t hold a candle to Windows 10.

Conclusion

If you are a hardcore gamer, you will want to gravitate towards one of the Microsoft operating systems. While a few of the more recent ones will cut it in terms of gaming, you should really consider Windows 10 as your go-to. This is the operating system you choose if you want to play graphically impressive games like Death Stranding, Red Dead Redemption 2, and more.

However, if you are more interested in casual gaming with an excellent user interface, perhaps something like macOS will check all of your personal boxes.

With that in mind, Microsoft Windows has been the mainstay for both casual and professional gamers over the decades.

Either way, you should do your own research into what gaming preferences speak to you most. Whichever you choose, you can always experiment with things like Ubuntu, Lakka, Fedora, and more. You aren’t stuck with the operating system you buy.

Explore the Different Dimensions of A Video Game World

0

Video Game Dimensions
Whether it is the brand new Playstation 5, Xbox One, or an old-time PC, the dimensions video games have are varied and unique. No, not just the physical dimension.

Sure, a game being 3D brings it to life over past 2D titles. However, so much more goes into a video game world than just what the player’s perspective is. Think of ambiance, times in which you felt that the story and real-time decisions affected you deeply.

Our favorite video game heroes are part of the game worlds where they feel at home. Great game design and emotional stakes foster effective game worlds.

Dimensions of Video Game Worlds

Let’s break down the different dimensions into a few key concepts, beginning with the physical dimension. The player can easily immerse themselves through multiple things like the game’s context, time, emotion, and more.

Physical

Physical Dimension - 2D and 3D
This is what you probably think of when the term ‘dimension’ pops up. 2D, 3D, it seems like dimensions, games, and adventure all gets along famously. Players can experience the character’s journey from a few different perspectives.

2D

With 2D, players usually only have control of a set number of directional actions. Think of games like Mario or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. These 2D side scrollers allowed players to move forward, backward, sideways, and (sometimes) diagonally. At the time, this was revolutionary and is still a ton of fun.

However, game designers didn’t need to concern themselves with conveying a significant depth to the player. The video game character would either move left, right, up and down. Video game characters in 2D

However, there is even more nuance to the physical dimensions games have.

3D

With more extraordinary hardware and graphical capability, the rise of mainstream 3D titles began.

When I think of 3D games, I think of Super Mario 64. In Mario’s first full-fledged adventure out of the 2D constraints he was used to, the player can control Mario in any direction. Along with greater control came a sense of greater depth. The various game worlds were colorful, creative, and felt real despite their cartoonish appearances.

While 3D games don’t automatically mean that a game is more atmospheric or emotionally poignant, their approach lends itself to aspects like more astonishing graphics, a more in-depth atmosphere, and the feeling of a living, breathing game world.

3D games are more easily able to offer more immersive effects to gamers. Instead of attacking Dracula’s castle by jumping on 2D platforms, players feel like they are inside the castle alongside terrifying monsters.

Temporal

Temporal Dimension - Day and Night Cycle
The temporal dimension, in this case, refers to time.

For example, when playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, there exists a more realistic day and night cycle than in other games. Fittingly, this passage of game time creates a sense of realism and adds to the game’s fantastic atmosphere. It feels like there are real stakes attached to getting out of the wilderness before sundown in Hyrule.

After night falls, the drawbridge to Hyrule’s castle town is raised. Not only are you out in the hostile game world on your own, but nighttime in the game world conjures forth menacing skeletons called Stalchildren.

Until the morning light, the Stalchildren relentlessly rise from the ground and attack the player. While a single Stalchild on its own isn’t too terrifying, they often converge on the player in groups.

This more realistic passage of time creates the sense of a real-world left to its own devices. It also makes a sense of urgency, motivating you to run as fast as you can to safety.

In Ocarina of Time, each day lasts two minutes and thirty seconds. Although not similar to our real-world passage of time, it simulates how players react to this type of game dimension.

Environment

Physical Environment
We all know that a game’s environment is arguably the most significant part of a game’s atmosphere. Whether it’s the dirty subterranean jail cells in Silent Hill 2, or the fantastical town of Baldur’s Gate, the environment tells stories that game characters and documentation could never tell effectively on their own.

While the physical dimension games have referred to the set space and limitations, the environment occupies the designated area.

Backstory and Context

This is where a game’s backstory and cultural context come into play to flesh out the game world. Several elements, drawn on from writers and game designers, allow you to feel like the world is a real place.

In Pillars of Eternity II, the cultural context will enable you to see the value of how rich and varied different cultures are. You have peaceful and warlike tribes, backstabbing corporations, pirates, and more. You feel as if these groups and people have been at war for centuries.

Physical Environment

Not every game knocks it out of the park when it comes to the cultural context, and they don’t have to. Sports and driving games don’t need to do this, and frankly, it’d be a little weird if they did!

The physical environment is what players experience when playing the game. Whether it’s a jungle or a gritty urban cityscape, the environment should immerse the player—physical surroundings matter.

If you want to pull a player into a game world, ideally, you want to make that world believable. In games like Nier: Automata, the gritty, long-destroyed environment makes you feel like you’re exploring a ruined version of Earth.

Related: Does yellow paint belong in game design?

The game designers succeeded in this by populating the game world with crumbling buildings, overgrowth, birds, grass, and thousands of other nuanced details. These small objects and inclusions add to the overall picture.

Emotional

Emotional Dimension of Games
The emotional dimension of games is one that affects the player emotionally. While this can refer to how game characters feel, it’s mostly aimed at making you, the player, feel some emotion.

As years go by, game stories have become so much more than an Italian plumber saving a princess. It seems with each passing season, there is a game title that attempts to pull at your heartstrings.

This is fantastic in several ways. First, it allows players to invest themselves in the game. Do they hate a character? Do they fear a character? What is giving the player motivation to complete an objective? Duty? Honor?

These things enhance gameplay and make games where you usually would go from point A to point B with little fanfare into epic journeys.

The emotional dimension also ties in heavily with the environmental dimension. Games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill strike terror into the hearts of wary gamers with their unique dark and foreboding settings.

Ethical

Ethical Dimension of Games
The ethical dimension points to the cultural context in the environmental dimension and emotional dimension.

Games like Fable love to put players to the test. A famous example, Fable III, has the player choose between two difficult choices.

These two choices, spend money to ease citizens’ suffering but put yourself at the disadvantage of an imminent enemy attack, make the player think and deliberate. Of course, you could just ignore the citizenry and save money to outfit your army.

But what’s the right choice?

In RPG games, players have the chance to play any character they usually want. Even in the Witcher, players can attack people randomly and act like a jerk. Some games outwardly say that you need to be ready for punishment if you act like a jerk.

The ethical dimension defines all of these rules for the player.

Conclusion

See? Games are much more than just 3D and 2D. They contain much more intensive and multifaceted aspects and effects that affect player behavior, reactions, and more.

Next time you boot up a game like Death Stranding on Playstation, take a look at the game world and see how it fits into all the dimensions. A post-apocalyptic Earth, filled with rocky crags, sheer cliffs, and unspeakable horrors.

Feel free to do this exercise with any game you choose. It’s a great way of thinking of game design and how game designers execute practical ideas.

Zenva Academy: Learn Technical Skills At Your Own Pace

0

Zenva Academy
There has never been a better time to learn technological skills, especially through an online learning platform. Always wanted to learn something like HTML and make your own game? Learn full-stack web development and create your very own web page?

Luckily, there are quite a few different outlets out there to hone your tech skills. A learning company called Zenva Academy is quickly becoming a heavy-hitter for quality coding and technological teaching.

Zenva Academy

First off, yes, Zenva Academy is legit. Whether it’s good or not, depends on you entirely. When learning online, everyone is different. Some people are strictly visual learners, and they need video lessons and things planned out step by step. Others only learn well by doing.

Zenva Academy blends all of these different learning styles to create an accommodating service for those curious about specific technological skills.

It emphasizes that the best way to learn is by doing, and it really puts that to the test in many of the courses.

Courses Offered

All of the courses cover the main areas of tech. They are data science, machine learning, artwork, web development, game development, and mobile development.

Let’s check out some courses in some of these areas, along with some costs.

Python Mini-Degree

This mini-degree introduces applicants to the popular programming language, Python. Throughout eight major lessons, curious coders will become extremely familiar with data science, machine learning, and coding for games and apps.

RPG Academy

Through on-demand access to high-quality video lessons, projects, and course code, RPG Academy is pretty impressive. Zenva claims that RPG Academy is the “world’s first on-demand curriculum designed to teach ANYONE how to code and build impressive 2D and 3D RPGs with Unity.”

Coding 101 Bundle – Programming Essentials

This free course on web development gives you all you need to know about programming. This is the perfect class for a student who isn’t sure about committing a full year’s payment. It also gives you a solid chance to see if you can benefit from the course materials.

You can even get a certificate upon completion.

Price Model

Zenva Academy uses a subscription method of price modeling. Depending on when you sign up, you could take advantage of a nice little discount. It can be expensive for some students, especially if you only want to learn from one or two courses.

However, there are also free courses. This is great, as it introduces you to their learning model, what you can expect from their mini-degree courses, and more.

Zenva vs. Udemy

Let’s compare Udemy and Zenva and see what each site offers, lacks, and how they stack up against each other.

Instructors

With Zenva, you have a few instructors that teach many courses. This is a good thing, as these are well-vetted and accomplished professionals.

Not to knock Udemy in this regard, but you could technically become an instructor right now. Okay, maybe there are a few more steps to becoming one. But overall, Udemy suffers from a lack of quality control.

Money

This one is a bit difficult. Zenva has a relatively flat subscription fee for all of its courses. While perhaps too much money for people to commit to, you can find a course on Udemy in the same subject for astronomical amounts of money.

However, it can swing the other way too. You can find much cheaper courses on Udemy sometimes. We’re talking $10 courses. So price-wise, Udemy has more freedom but much more unpredictability.

With Zenva Academy, its price is relatively stable. It depends on what you’re willing to commit to financially. Overall, the Zenva pricing offers more bang for your buck.

Courses

Udemy’s freedom with instructors and prices also gives it some advantage with its courses.

Udemy offers some great, up-to-date coursework. However, with the freedom instructors have over their curriculum, it’s hard to know if what you’re learning is truly current or even relevant.

With Zenva Academy, their courses are painstakingly kept up to date. They release free updates and edits to their courses and keep students informed in whichever way they can.

Who Has Better Variety?

This is where Zenva Academy falls short. Udemy is known for its exceptionally diverse set of online learning courses. You can learn everything from piano to data analytics. Udemy is great for various skills that you want to explore, and it’s an excellent outlet for curious students.

With Zenva Academy, the coarse variety is rather one-note. However, this is by design, as they focus on tech and tech-related fields. They don’t claim to be like Udemy in that regard. You can arguably get a better online learning education in data science and web frameworks.

So, between Udemy and Zenva, the latter has a more detailed specialization for a more steady price. Udemy has more course variety but a lower standard for instructors and course quality.

Final Thoughts on Zenva Academy

While sites like Udemy offer many exciting courses through online learning platforms, Zenva is a robust data science and technological Bootcamp. Gain tech skills and access the different resources that an educational company like Zenva Academy can offer.

If you don’t want to commit financially to Zenva Academy, they offer some solid courses completely free. Particularly ones in the web development section. Check out some more reviews on Youtube or around the web.

You can quickly sign up for a Zenva account right on the home page.

What results is a frustrating, hilarious, and strangely addictive game where you attempt to beat other peoples’ scores. It takes a lot of practice.

The creator, Bennet Foddy, stated that:

“One of the things I found with QWOP is that people like to set their own goals in a game. Some people would feel like winners if they ran 5 meters, and others would feel like winners if they inched all the way along the track over the course of an hour. If I had put a social leaderboard or par system in, those people would probably have all quit out of frustration, leaving only the most determined or masochistic players behind.”

How to Create Awesome Game Names: Intro to Gamertags

0

Good Video Game Names
If you have ever been in an intense multiplayer match against a formidable opponent, you know that you need every advantage available to you. That includes a great Gamertag.

Yes, really.

The last thing you want to do is finish an intense deathmatch, only for your opponent to see ‘MasterChief420 has killed you.’

MasterChief420? Ugh, it’s so uncreative. Instead of something that sticks in other gamers’ minds, you have a forgettable, bland gamer tag. You want stuff like funny Xbox names, something that may strike fear into the hearts of other gamers.

You want something that makes people laugh or even do a double-take. The beautiful thing about crafting personas online is that you pretty much have free rein to, well, create. We’ll show you why you need a cool gamer tag, along with some of our own ideas of crafting cool usernames for games.

What Is A Gamertag?

Specifically, Gamertags are the official online game names that Xbox and Microsoft users use when playing online games. Gamers from all over the world flock to different Xbox games sporting their unique gamer tags.

Gamertags came along with the launch of Xbox LIVE in 2002, and ever since, Gamer tag has pretty much come to refer to your online alias in a game, regardless if you are playing on an Xbox or PS4.

What Makes A Good Gamertag?

Back in the day, putting the letter ‘X’ on either side of your gamer tag showed that you were hardcore. Hint, it really didn’t, and was kind of embarrassing! It would be best if you avoided stuff like lame trends and passing fads that will seem downright cringe in a few years.

How to Come Up With Good Gamer Tags

Anyone taking their first steps in an online game wants to know how to make an excellent gamer tag. It’s pretty much the only thing, other than your voice, that represents who you are to other gamers online.

A good gamer tag also provokes conversation between gamers. I remember seeing Gamer tags where I had to compliment the gamer on their clever name and secretly get mad that I hadn’t thought of it before.

There are quite a few name generators for nearly any genre of entertainment. Want a cool fantasy name? There’s a name generator for that.

We highly recommend a name generator that actually forms a fictional background of a character, complete with nationalities and ages. The result is a list of badass alliterative names you can use for gamer tags, as well as role-playing games.

If you create the ideal Gamertag, you could actually end up selling your Gamertag.

How to Protect Your Gamertag from Scammers

With the infamous 2011 PlayStation Network outage, the shift towards protecting your gamer tag on different consoles became increasingly apparent. How do you protect your gamer tag so when the worst happens, you can rest easy?

It only takes a few extra steps and can mean the difference between having your account secure versus getting hacked by someone on the other side of the world.

  • Enable two-factor authentication: This will make it harder for people to barge into your account. This will have you set up a system where you get a notification from your phone every time you try to log in. Someone kept trying to log into my account, enabling two-factor authentication to stop potentially illegal activity in its tracks.
  • Have a strong password: I know, it may seem obvious. But sometimes the best solution is the simplest one. Someone will have a more difficult time trying to break into your account if your password is nuanced, unique, and, most importantly, a pain to type out. Compare that with those who have their passwords like ‘password’ or ‘1234.’
  • In the same vein as a strong password, simply don’t talk about or share your password with anyone.

If you follow these basic rules, your account will be protected from scammers, and you can continue gaming in peace.

Badass/Cool/Funny Gamertags

Xbox Gamertags

Good Xbox Gamertags are the stuff of legend. I love funny Xbox names. In the days of old, I remember seeing some hilarious games while playing Rainbow Six 3. That’s why you need to carry on that remarkable legacy of funny Xbox names.

Check out this forum on Giant Bomb for some classic examples.

PS4 Online IDs

So what about the PS4? Sony’s gamer names are referred to only as PlayStation Online ID. Not as flashy as Gamertags, but it’s the same endgame.

Check out this article with some excellent starting Gamertag suggestions.

PUBG Clan Gamertags

It’s always great to see some funny and cool gamer names while dropping into the intense gameplay of PUBG. Check out this article with some badass and unique PUBG team names and more. Coming up with team name ideas can be a lot of fun with friends.

Fortnite Gamertags

The wild world of Fortnite is so packed with players attempting to one-up each other and win the next Royale. That’s why it’s a great idea to go into a match with your team equipped with a great and memorable team name.

This website outlines some basic ideas and some creative gamer names you can use in Fortnite to separate yourself from the pack.

Minecraft Gamertags

Cool Minecraft names are always good. That’s why using something like the Nickfinder works wonders. It includes cool fonts and other unique characters to set yourself apart from generic gamer names.

Conclusion

Whatever you choose to do to craft the perfect gamer tag, make it your own. Don’t steal ideas or create something unoriginal like ‘MasterChief420.’ Use the username generators, explore the Internet, and workshop some ideas. Gamer tag creation can be a very serious business.

Know Your RPG Classes

0

RPG Classes
If you have never played an in-depth tabletop RPG game of something like Dungeons & Dragons, I highly recommend it. Why? Because it allows you to control the tempo of the game and play the way you want to.

DnD characters in a fantasy setting can range from your standard human fighter to an Aarakocran bird person. Yes, that’s a real thing.

If you are a gamer who loves RPGs, JRPGS, or CRPGS, you probably know some character classes basics. However, where do these classes in Final Fantasy, Baldur’s Gate, and other series come from?

If you’re someone who only knows a little about RPG game classes, then we have the ultimate guide to introduce you to your next favorite character class. Let’s get some background on RPG classes, skills, abilities, subclasses, and archetypes.

RPG Classes

What are RPG Classes?

What are the RPG classes?

RPG classes are the character frameworks and templates you use when playing a role-playing game. Character classes differentiate characters from one another by wielding different weapons and possessing different skill sets utilized by players.

Standard RPG Class Types: Form and Function

Whether you are playing something like Final Fantasy X, or World of WarCraft, you have your basic class type. These range from fighters and warriors who specialize in strength and power to wizards and clerics who cast spells.

Are you bold and brash? Into heavy combat with swords and axes? Then you might want to be a warrior or barbarian.

Or are you someone who likes to hang back and let other players get hit in combat? Cast some spells and invoke religion, and maybe you’d do better as a mage or cleric.

Character Class: History

The grandfather of them all, Dungeons and Dragons, was the first to introduce character classes. Ever since its inception, Dungeons and Dragons have influenced nearly every RPG class system that has ever existed.

The RPG class system may have shifted over time, particularly with the changing of the basic Dungeons and Dragons tabletop RPG rules. Regardless, the main tactics and skills have remained.

Different tabletops RPG and evolving forms of gameplay allowed for creating different variations on classes and gameplay.

Class Archetypes: Unique Skill Sets & Variations

Class archetypes are subclasses for characters. These enhance game classes and add flavor to your playing experience. You could have a ranger who also has a ranger archetype of a beastmaster. These open up new skills and make these standard classes even more unique and fun to play.

For example, I play as an elf rogue who has an inquisitive archetype. While I can partake in all sorts of things enjoyed by the rogue classes, I can further enhance a role-playing game by acting like a detective. Sure, I like to act like a thief and use my sword to intimidate, but I also love investigating the game setting.

Inquisitive turns my elf rogue into a fast-talking, perceptive investigator. If an enemy doesn’t give men an answer I like, I’m not afraid to shoot an arrow or throw a knife their way. It all depends on how you play the game.

On the other hand, you could choose the assassin archetype. You can see how even in one RPG class, changing your archetype can alter the story’s course from game to game.

List: Common Character Archetypes

Different archetypes allow players to gain useful skills, powers, and abilities at different levels. For example, at level 3, 7, and 15, the arcane archer gets various unique skills.

While there are tons of variations to these character archetypes, we’ll list just a few interesting ones to explore. We’ll list their basic makeup, along with unique skill sets.

Fighter Archetypes

RPG Class Archetype - Fighter

Arcane Archer

Arcane archers use their bow proficiency to deal with devastating magical bow damage to anyone in their path.

  • Proficiency in arcane or nature
  • Ability: Magic Arrow, Arcane Shot, Curving Shot, and more

Battle Master

A battle master learns all the different ways to, well, master battle.

  • Combat Superiority
  • Maneuvers: these enhance attacks
  • Know Your Enemy: this allows the player to learn about an enemy or ally outside of combat. Hitpoints, armor class, and class level are things battle masters can see.

Champion

Champions are all about physical excellence and devastation. This is the perfect archetype for those who want to deal with raw damage.

  • Improved Critical: This improves your chance at landing a devastating critical blow
  • Remarkable Athlete: You get extreme proficiency bonuses to acrobatics and
  • Survivor: You get an impressive addition to hit points during battle if you’re on death’s doorstep.

Artificial Difficulty In Games: What Is It?

0

Artificial Difficulty
One day you decide to play Dark Souls. You’ve heard of things like fake difficulty, making the game much harder than other RPGs, but maybe that’s an exaggeration.

You’re making your way through a level when all of a sudden, an enemy comes out of nowhere and attacks—pretty standard stuff.

However, this time, the enemy kills you in one hit. A single hit from a weaker enemy takes your health down to zero and transports you back to the beginning of the level.

What happened? Was it the lack of skill of the gamer player? Or something more?

While some may cry out, ‘Get good!’ there’s an actual term for this: artificial difficulty.

History

Also known as fake difficulty, artificial difficulty is when a game’s mechanics make the game more difficult in different ways.

The Dark Souls games are notorious for this. While some people welcome the unforgiving game design, others become enraged from the unfair challenge.

However, it didn’t start with the Souls series. Some very first instances of challenging titles and game modes date back to the heyday of arcades.

Since arcade machines required the player to insert an amount of money to play the game, what better way to get more bang for your buck as a game developer than ramping up the game’s difficulty? Making a game harder allowed for more profits, but it also incentivized gamers to try to best one of the most challenging arcade games.

There’s a debate to be had between whether artificial difficulty is a good thing or not. While it can make successes sweeter, it makes failures hurt even more.

There are two schools of thought. Some welcome the extra challenge, even if the game uses design methods to dominate the players. The others, arguably the majority of players, don’t enjoy this form of challenge. They play games to have fun, not to feel like the AI is cheating.

Different Types of Artificial Difficulty

Artificial Difficulty - Dark Souls
There are a few types of video game artificial difficulty. For the arcades, the profit motive was enough to make games a source of frustration for thousands of gamers.

Others relish in having a hard mode, putting skills to the test. Let’s see what types of artificial difficulty you can find in many games.

  • Different difficulty modes, where enemies simply have higher damage output and the player is weaker.
  • Clunky or awkward controls to purposely make the player wrestle with controls, let alone complete a level without dying.
  • No checkpoints. Nothing hurts more than making it to the end of a level, dying, and getting sent back to the very beginning. Especially in a tough-as-nails game.
  • Punishments on losing, like losing gold, permadeath, or other unfair game tweaks.

Drawing the Line

So what exactly is the dividing line between artificial difficulty and an actual hard game?

You can easily discern between a legitimately challenging game and a game with artificial difficulty in a few ways.

A game that emphasizes artificial difficulty will disregard whatever you do. No matter how much good gear you have or grinding for XP you’ve done, it will always find a way to slap you down at any and every opportunity.

However, a challenging game rewards you for the hard work and learning you put into the game. While games may have a steep learning curve, with high damage and perilous quests around every corner, you can overcome them with skill and dedication.

So where do games like Dark Souls, Bloodbourne, and Sekiro fall? Well, it depends on who you ask. It may fall somewhere in the middle. By the end of these titles, you have the mechanics down, and you’re able to take a lot of frustration out of the experience.

Conclusion

Failure hurts. So when you try to relax with a good video game at the end of the day, the last thing you need is to get pulverized by Dark Souls’ two nightmare bosses, Ornstein and Smough.

However, there is a difference between fake or artificial difficulty and a genuinely challenging game. Mastering demanding games can indeed be an art and can help you feel accomplished for learning something with a challenge and overcoming it.

Luckily, there are reviews, walkthroughs, forums, blogs, and more to help you discern between the two. Don’t let artificial difficulty ruin your fun.

Unless that is, you like that type of thing.

2D Video Game Art: Styles and History

2D Game Art History

Introduction

Video games have been known to have some of the most breathtaking modern visuals in any medium, only rivaled by technological advances in film.

Although seemingly being debated all the time, we firmly believe that video games are art. I mean, the whole thing is made up entirely of art. Well, okay, it’s a little more nuanced than that, but we stick by our positions.

Video games have become such an intimate and creative art form medium to communicate messages, stories, and symbolism to the player.

What Is 2D Art?

2D art is simply art that isn’t 3D. It’s a bit broad and covers the majority of art styles. For example, an oil painting of people on canvas is a form of 2D art.

Same with a picture.

Unless forms of drawing or painting in which the artist is actively trying to simulate 3D perspectives, all of them are 2D art. Other forms of 2D art are cartoons, and of course, certain video games.

If depth is added to a painting, it then transforms from merely two-dimensional art to 3D art. The same goes for game design.

2D Game Art Styles

Since there is such a variety of games on the market, it only makes sense that there is also a slew of different 2D game art styles to examine. Here are just some of the most prolific 2D game art styles in game design.

Pixel Art

2D game art - Pixel
2D pixel art has always been popular. While at one point it was all that games were able to process in terms of graphical power, 2D pixel art is still wildly popular today. It wasn’t only included in video games. In fact, 2D pixel art predates the invention of the video game by quite a number of years.

2D pixel art goes further back in time than the first video game by centuries. Some first prominent examples of the 2D pixel art process were mosaics crafted on the walls of ancient cities. The tradition continued steadily for years until the present day.

Outside the gaming world, 2D pixel art can be found everywhere. Examples include posters, pegboards with plastic beads, Lite Brite, and the very first digital image by Russell Kirsch. The image, a portrait of his son, Walden, was made up of 30,976 pixels.

2D Pixel Art Today

However, this was a long time ago. You may be more familiar with 2D pixel art making up the 8-bit or 16-bit graphics of games like The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy VI, Mega Man, and more. The very first example of 2D pixel art in game design is in Atari’s Pong.

2D pixel art, along with being made up of individual pixels, makes its way to your gaming monitor in the completed form of game sprites. Sprites are bitmaps that are combined to create a larger product like a character or environment.

2D pixel art is a favorite game design tool for a number of studios. It creates a retro-style feeling to a modern game. A great example is Hotline Miami. A modern-style game drenched in retro style and vibrant 1980s colors.

Cel Shading, also known as ‘toon shading’, is a game design technique where the designers manipulate the shading in an image to make it appear flatter. A creative mix of lighting, shading, and color makes visuals seem truly unique.

Not only that, but cel-shaded games seem to hold up visually better than other games. For example, Jet Set Radio still looks creative and timeless, while games released at the same time have graphics that now seem like eyesores.

Cel Shading Today

Talented illustrators, designers, and artists put in a lot of time and effort to create this truly unique, timeless 2D game art style.

You may be familiar with some famous examples of cel-shading, namely the art styles in Team Fortress 2, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Viewtiful Joe, and Jet Set Radio. There are even more modern titles, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Cel shading isn’t unique to just game design. The 2006 film, A Scanner Darkly, used cel-shading in the entire movie, giving it a unique color and lighting style.

The very first entirely cel-shaded game was Fear Effect, released in 2000.

Realism

2D game art - Realism
Realism is probably what you’d expect. The realism art style focuses on creating extremely real-looking, high-resolution images. The main aim of realism in the arts is to create and represent images with all the truthful aspects of the image.

For example, in a realist painting or drawing, the artist would possibly implement things like blemishes on someone’s skin, rather than omit them from the drawing. This creates a striking vision, especially in games.

With game art and graphics developing at a rapid pace, most game models and characters, depending on the game, have a realistic flair reminiscent of the realism art movement.

Flat

2D game art - Flat
Flat game art is exactly that: flat. It is similar to geometric art, however, it’s not as simplistic. Flat art overlaps with different art styles, namely pixel art. It’s a quintessential 2D game art style, as it puts the emphasis on the flat and simple aspects of the background, enemies, characters, and other content.

A great example of a ‘flat’ game is something like Kentucky Route Zero.

Geometric

2D game art - Geometric
Geometric art deals primarily in shapes. While they don’t necessarily need to be simple shapes, geometric game art puts a great emphasis on shapes in its game world. In games like Geometry Wars, players control literal geometric shapes by shooting at other very simple geometric shapes.

The same goes for more retro titles like Asteroids and Pong. Dungeons in old RPGs used to just be rudimentary geometric squares and rectangles. Some great samples of geometric games are titles like Geometry Wars, Pac Man, Asteroids, Pong, and the platformer, Super Meat Boy.

Vector

2D game art - Vector
Vector game 2D game art is a favorite amongst game designers. The user interface, GUI, characters, environment, and more are all made using polygons. Think of it as a unique mixture of geometric modeling and pixel art. A favorite feature of vector art is its amazingly high resolution and graphical capability.

Some notable examples of vector game art are The Banner Saga, and Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.

Cutout

2D game art - Cutout
Cutout 2D game art is an art style mainly found in stop motion animation. However, some games have utilized an extremely unique style. Namely, the Paper Mario games.

The design of the Paper Mario games, you guessed it, gives the impression that the characters and game world are all crafted with paper. It gives a unique and striking depth to shapes, settings, items, and more.

Monochromatic

2D game art - Monochromatic
Monochromatic, ‘mono’ meaning ‘one,’ and ‘chroma’ meaning ‘color,’ you can see where this is going. Monochromatic game art is when graphics, backgrounds, designs, and settings are all one hue.

For example, in Limbo, everything is gray and black. This creates a unique setting where lighting, depth, and mood all intersect to create patterns, effects, and contrasts that puts emphasis on ambiance and other emotions like fear and hope.

Some great examples of the monochromatic approach in video games are titles like Limbo, Inside, and Return of the Obra Dinn.

Where to Find Free & Paid Assets For Your Next Video Game Project

Video Game Assets
While we get to enjoy the finished product of a game designer’s hard work, chances are we don’t really explore what went into the game’s creation. Games are more than just pretty visuals and addicting questlines, gameplay mechanics, and multiplayer modes.

Some of the critical aspects of a game are assets. But what are game assets? Let’s dig a little deeper to find out why game assets are crucial to a game’s success.

What Are Game Assets?

Video game assets are anything that can be in a game. We’re talking characters, objects, trees, cars, barrels, you name it. Assets are what make game worlds what they are. Without assets, frankly, you don’t have a game. In the Witcher 3, Geralt’s weapons are assets. So are his pieces of armor and various potions.

It’s not just graphical things either. Assets can be music, sound effects, and even different bits of programming. In that case, Geralt’s grunts when he gets hit by a ferocious monster is technically a game asset.

Characters

Characters, whether they’re non-player characters, or the player themselves, populate the game world. Without them, there would be just a lonely, open game environment. You can purchase and download various character assets from different places.

Asset stores have either custom characters or ones that you’re familiar with.

Objects

Objects can range from barrels to buildings. They make up the framework of a captivating and immersive game world.

Environments

The actual environment can benefit from assets as well. Different patches of grass, stone, and more are all significant assets to consider.

Vehicles

If you’re creating a game like Grand Theft Auto, or just a title with city elements, vehicles are a must.

GUI

Graphical User Interface
GUI stands for the graphical user interface, and it’s what we see as the HUD, or heads up display. It also comprises in-game menus, icons, and more. The graphical user interface is one of the first things we see in a game, so having a good-looking GUI can be extremely beneficial to a game’s success.

The graphical user interface is also made up of game assets.

Phaser.js Development (Scripts, Animation, Physics, Render)

0

Phaser (Building Games Has Never Been This Easy!)
While there are a ton of options when it comes to designing your own game, which engine do you choose? What if you don’t want to get all mixed up learning a new coding language that seems way too complicated?

Why not explore your options in HTML5? That’s right, and you can still make some great games using HTML5. No Python or SQL necessary. How do you do it?

Through Phaser. To use Phaser 3, all you need is a web browser.

The Phaser 3 Basics

Using the surprising power of HTML5, you’re able to create different game titles complete with a library of sprite sheets, game physics, and input control.

History of The Phaser Process

Phaser was first released in 2013 by Richard Davey. It uses a site, Pixi.js, to be its rendering library. This essentially means that the game is self-contained. It’s never compiled, meaning that it needs a web browser to even start.

The 4 Main Parts of Phaser in Games

Parts of Phaser JS

Scripts

Games native to Phaser 3 only need JavaScript to get started.

Animation

Animating in Phaser 3 is as easy as uploading your sprite sheet of choice and then creating various animations.

Physics

There’s no need to get confused over physics. Phaser 3 already uses Arcade Physics built right into its framework.

Render

All the rendering takes place on a website, Pixi.js, and uses WebGL. This allows the game never to compile, requiring you to merely boot up an Internet browser to start playing.

Getting Started with a Game in Phaser.js

PhaserJS or Phaser JavaScript is an excellent mixture of both HTML5 and JavaScript. It’s actually pretty easy to get things moving. First, you need to download a zip file containing the application programs and files. There’s no code, however, so get those scripting muscles ready.

Later, you’ll become familiar with game states. These are the main phases of the game. There are three different states.

Menu

This is your main title screen. Nothing really happens here, and it serves more as a placeholder or transitional state until you access the game.

Game

This is where all of the action takes place. You control your character, whoever or whatever they may be, and complete your objectives in-game.

Game Over

The game over the state is when you fail to achieve your goal through several different methods. We all know we get a game over if we run out of lives, so this game state shows the classic game over screen. This is connected to the Game state, as the Game state starts back up when you click through.

Phaser 3 and It’s Journey

Richard Davey has been tirelessly working on newer, better iterations of Phaser. It’s now up to the third stable version, Phaser 3. This was released in April 2020. Richard Davey is currently working on the next version of Phaser, Phaser 4, to modify the 2D framework using TypeScript.

Conclusion

If you’ve always wanted to mess around with HTML5 and create a simple game, Phaser 3 is a fantastic option. It allows you to get some coding experience without all the hassle of straight-up learning an entire coding language.

Richard Davey has created a concrete way to develop 2D games through this framework. Hopefully, we’ll not only see future versions of the Phaser model but of innovations as well.

Let’s Learn Game Card Design

0

Card Game Design Process
Card games are and have always been immensely popular. You can see the wildly different iterations of old favorites like Go Fish and Apples to Apples even today.

Building on a proven formula is a tried and true method. Like video games and other forms of interactive media, card games have evolved with the times. From simplistic Solitaire to something like Magic the Gathering, card games, and card game design is a unique science.

Along with these fan favorites, people are always making new and unique card games. How do they do it? How do you become the force behind excellent card game design?

Key Concepts to Consider in the Design Process

When creating a game of any magnitude, it’s a good idea to consider a few critical aspects of your game’s background. As the card game maker, you need to take a few things into account during the design process.

The Game World

What world does the card game take place in? What do the characters in the game world do? What is the motivation behind the progression of the game? While seemingly straightforward in nature, all of these questions form the first steps in the card game design process.

Coming Up With a Unique and Interesting Idea

Coming up with an interesting card game idea
This may be arguably one of the most challenging aspects of the entire card game design process. How do you come up with a unique and exciting idea that hasn’t been done before? We tend to go towards what’s familiar, but you need to be original here.

Gather your team and prepare for some creative brainstorming sessions. Weed out ideas that are weaker or resemble other more popular games. Feel free to borrow certain aspects of games that work, but never steal or plagiarize!

For example, the card game What Do You Meme? shares the same structure as Cards Against Humanity, but instead of text, they use pictures to make gameplay move forward.

Along with an exciting idea, make sure to work hard on developing game mechanics. Game mechanics are everything, and if the game doesn’t have good mechanics, you might as well scrap any idea you’ve thought of. A good idea is worth nothing if you can’t execute it well.

Outsourcing for Art

Hiring game designers
Now you have your unique card game design idea, but you and your friends can’t draw. What happens now? Do you attempt shoddy artwork and hope that consumers will look past it? Definitely not.

If you feel like you can’t complete certain design functions, outsourcing may be a good way of finishing designs. Outsourcing is when a company hires another company to achieve a specific task. In the card game design process, outsourcing for artwork or graphic design is a good and smart idea.

To outsource effectively, you need to do some research. Find some graphic artists online that you think would do a great job. Try to find someone whose art style is compatible with your game’s look and feel.

Design a brief for them, explain their duties, and learn about how much their rates are. If all goes well, you’ll have a talented individual or team working on your card game design. This frees up time for you and your team to work out any remaining kinks.

Testing and Improving Upon Your Game

Testing and Improving Upon Your Game
Chances are that your card game won’t precisely be perfectly tuned by the time the first iteration is printed. That’s okay, don’t be discouraged. This is when you bring your card game around and make sure that your game is above all else, fun.

This is where some scientific and statistical procedures come into play. Make sure you have your card game design goals in mind, your demographic you’re making it for, and more. You could have your game designed for teenagers, but through testing, find out that younger kids enjoyed it more than your original demographic. Testing is key to your game’s success.

Test your game with everyone, or all age groups. Carefully observe what they like and dislike about your game. Are the rules too confusing? Is the art style ugly? Is it simply not fun to play?

Record all of these observations and players’ opinions better to work out any card game design process issues. Without testing, you could miss a glaring error you and your team have made. Since you’re immersed in the making of the game, the focus is on what makes the card game work or not work may get blurry.

Be warned. This is usually a long process. If you want to get the absolute best results from your tests, you need to be prepared to test it on everyone for quite a while. Along with making incremental improvements, this process makes the game more robust, and ultimately more successful.

Conclusion

Hopefully, following these steps in the card game design process transform your card game idea into a tangible product. It may take a long time, but translating ideas into products is an exciting and rewarding endeavor for a dedicated card game maker.

The Rise of the Roguelikes: What Is A Roguelike?

0

Roguelike Renaissance
You and your party are deep in a dungeon. You’re low on potions, and everyone’s health is low. You don’t know what’s lurking behind the next corner, and there’s no going back. It could be a bountiful treasure chest or a vile monster.

Situations like these may be familiar to some gamers. They’re the signature gameplay elements of roguelikes. This mixture of extreme stress, discovery, and great gameplay leads to what video game commentators like to call the roguelike renaissance.

What Is A Roguelike?

Roguelikes are games with procedurally generated dungeons and permanent character death, or permadeath. They vary on style and subject. Some may have an art design around a medieval setting, while other games will focus on science fiction themes. Either way, the framework of the game is similar across the board.

Players enter a dungeon-like environment, often populated with formidable enemies and low resources, and attempt to make it to the end. It’s often the case that surviving becomes one of, if not the only goal during most playthroughs of roguelike games.

Don’t get too attached to a character, as they can turn into mincemeat in the very first room of the dungeon. Any items can disappear along with your character’s untimely demise. All of these elements make up a unique yet familiar gameplay experience.

History

While roguelike games have become a popular genre in recent years, their roots go back exceptionally far.

With a passion for games like Dungeons & Dragons, roguelikes modeled themselves close to what you’d find in a tabletop role-playing game. Players customize their character in specific ways and go about adventuring with high stakes attached to their goal.

Players start at the beginning with meager supplies, only picking up what they can find in the dungeon itself. Games over the years have modified this loadout, but the essence remains relatively the same. You start with a character, some items, and enter a procedurally generated dungeon with some fog of war and hope you don’t die.

Who knew such a simple formula would be such a big hit?

Why Are Roguelikes Called Roguelikes?

The term itself is from the early 1990s on USENET. USENET is kind of a precursor to what we now know as Internet forums.

The name Rogue derives from a reference to the 1980 game Rogue. Rogue, or Rogue: Exploring the Dungeons of Doom, was a rudimentary dungeon crawler that revolutionized RPGs. It was one of the first to include all of the roguelike elements: permadeath, procedurally created dungeons, formidable enemies, and loot.

Gameplay and Design

General Gameplay

Regardless of the story, roguelike games boil down to navigating a player character through a dungeon that’s unique every time.

You can play the same level of a game in hundreds of different ways, with no two floors being the same. Instead of going into the dungeon with your best equipment, it’s up to the player, aided by their wits, to discover loot and valuable equipment while avoiding permadeath.

The game usually ends when the player reaches the final dungeon depth and faces a challenging boss battle.

Permadeath

Permanent death is something we don’t think about in games. You have checkpoints and save spots that all but guarantee that you won’t really lose anything important. Even if you do, you can get back on your feet in a few minutes.

With permadeath, an added level of anxiety looms over you during your quest. Each unexplored area turns into a potentially deadly hazard. Will you risk your hard-fought loot to explore just one more room?

With many roguelike games, that dynamic of pushing beyond your limit comes into play. Is the next room a treasure room, or does it have an extremely tough boss?

Random Generation

As we’ve said before, everything in a good roguelike is procedurally generated. The game generates a brand new experience each playthrough, keeping even veteran players on their toes.

Character Progression

While permadeath can put a damper on any game session, the promise of character progression offers a slim hope of pushing further and further into the depths of a dungeon.

For example, you could collect enough materials to purchase an upgrade like a double jump or more potent attacks. If these upgrades go beyond just one player character, they could mean the difference between making it out of the dungeon or meeting your doom.

Early Roguelikes

The earliest roguelikes had massive Dungeons and Dragons influence, often containing medieval-inspired settings. Some are based entirely on The Lord of the Rings locations.

  • ADOM

“Roguelike” vs “Roguelite” Games

The main difference between roguelikes and roguelites is the way they define their rules. Where roguelikes are steadfast in dedicating themselves to hardcore gameplay, roguelites may only adopt particular aspects, like permadeath. Sacrificing any of the main pillars of a roguelike technically makes a game a roguelite. However, this delineation hasn’t exactly stopped roguelite games from being called roguelikes.

You can think of roguelites as being ‘lite’ in roguelike elements.

Best Roguelike Games

Let’s cut to the chase and see what games will have you dying over and over, and coming back for more.

Darkest Dungeon

Roguelike - Darkest Dungeon

  • Red Hook Studios, Merge Games
  • Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One
  • Original release date: January 19, 2016

Darkest Dungeon is an extremely addictive roguelike in which you form a band of dysfunctional dungeon crawlers. Your goal: to infiltrate the dungeon beneath your family’s old manor. The problem: there are thousands of gross, slimy, eldritch monsters standing in your way.

The game’s sanity mechanics have bad things happening to your characters and make each dungeon crawl not only unique each time, but stressful. You’ll level up and get attached to characters, only for them to meet their gruesome end. However, you’ll want to dive right back into the depths, even after the worst dungeon run of your life.

Enter the Gungeon

Roguelike - Enter the Gungeon

  • Dodge Roll, Devolver Digital
  • Original Release Date: April 5, 2016
  • Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

If you love over-the-top gunplay and fast-paced, edge of your seat gameplay? Enter the Gungeon is a roguelike with an insane sense of humor, wonderful art style, and charming writing. You choose between a few different character archetypes and get to work going down further and further in the ‘Gungeon.’

The bosses and enemies you come across are fantastically designed and extremely challenging. Just when you think you’ve got it mastered, the game ups the tension and puts your hand-eye coordination to the ultimate test.

Rogue Legacy

Roguelike - Rogue Legacy

  • Cellar Door Games
  • Original Release Date: June 27, 2013
  • Microsoft Windows, Linux, OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS

While not exactly the most recent on the best roguelike games list, Rogue Legacy has a special place in the roguelike game pantheon.

In Rogue Legacy, you take on the role of a knight and explore a dungeon, attempting to slay four distinct bosses in different areas. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, the thing is that the enemies and bosses in this game are a bit unforgiving. Like any good roguelike game, Rogue Legacy puts all of your skills to the test in a wonderfully designed 2D side-scrolling adventure.

When you die (and you absolutely will, many times), you take on the role of your character’s heir. These heirs have different traits, making the game easier or more difficult than your previous playthrough. For example, an heir could be far-sighted and have a limited vision of areas and enemies. A truly unique and fun title, Rogue Legacy is an enjoyable romp into an unforgiving roguelike game.

The Binding of Isaac

Roguelike - The Binding of Isaac

  • Florian Himsl, Edmund McMillen
  • Original Release Date: September 28, 2011
  • Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux

The Binding of Isaac, developed by Edmund McMillen of Super Meat Boy fame, tells Isaac’s strange and dark story. In the game’s story, heavily inspired by the Bible story of the same name, Isaac flees to the lower basement levels to escape his mother sacrificing him to god.

It’s a roguelike that old Legend of Zelda fans will immediately recognize. That was Edmund McMillen’s inspiration during his planning session with fellow developer Florian Himsl.

The game has a dark, yet cartoonish art style, mixed with haunting ambiance and dark themes. This produces a unique and extremely effective roguelike game experience. It became trendy in Let’s Play YouTube videos, getting The Binding of Isaac extreme exposure.

Conclusion

Roguelike games keep pushing the boundaries of what we’re comfortable with as gamers. They challenge us to throw away the checkpoints and save game files to experience fast-paced, intense gameplay that doesn’t pull punches. However, if you’re able to persevere through the challenge, your rewards will be plenty.

Quick, Easy Steps To Animate A Character in the Unity Engine

0

Animating Characters in Unity
Unity is one of the premier game engines of the modern age. While perhaps not as powerful as the celebrated Unreal Engine, Unity has been the toolset for thousands of talented game developers and is officially the most popular third-party game development software.

Games like Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, Escape from Tarkov, and Outer Wilds have defined what gaming is capable of.

So how does someone like you take advantage of what Unity has to offer, namely Unity animations?

Characters are the heart and focal point of any game, and good animation is key to a game’s success and level of fun. You can ensure fluid and realistic movements of characters by using the Unity Animator.

Let’s see just how to animate a character in Unity.

Animation

Animation in Unity is probably more straightforward than you might think. Let’s break down some of the critical concepts behind Unity animation to introduce you to the process.

Animation Clips

Animation clips are what make up the brunt of your Unity animation. These are internal or external files placed into Unity to create animation.

These animation clips are an easier way of pinning applicable animations together to create a cohesive whole. Once clips are imported or created within the engine, we move onto animation controllers, giving us better instructions to the engine as to what characters should do next.

Animation Controllers

Animation controllers are, you guessed it, tools that allow you to dictate movements for your character. Animation controllers do this by organizing your various animation clips and assigning them to different commands. Every time you press the ‘X’ key, you could have an animation cycle between crouching and standing up.

Unity makes animator controllers for you once you start inputting animation information, creating clips, and utilizing state machines to make all of this work.

Wait, State Machines?

State machines refer to the fact that in animation, objects or figures perform actions all the time. As such, they’re in a series of states. Characters can be in a state of running, walking, swimming, you name it.

State machines refer to the overall package of all of the aspects of states. The transition between actions, the actions themselves, and different variables make up a state machine.

For example, from an idle position, your character can’t perform a running jump. However, they can perform a regular jump. The state machine is a flowchart of sorts that shows you what is achievable from any given state. State machines are vital aspects of Unity animation.

How to Animate A Character in Unity

Now that we know a little more about the importance of Unity animation, let’s see what some beginning steps toward animating characters are.

Unity Animation

2D animation usually has characters that move from left to right on the screen. Think of all of the early Mario games as fantastic examples of 2D games. To bring a 2D model to life, you’ll first need a few things.

With Unity 3D animation, you need to be more mindful of your surroundings in-game, as characters move in three dimensions, rather than in two different directions.

What You Need to Start Unity Animation

Ideally, you’re going to want somewhat of a primer course on some animating techniques, along with some familiarity with Unity’s user interface. Knowing the user interface is arguably one of the best ways to succeed when using something like the Unity animator.

You should experiment around and create a character of your own. Once you have a character and a simple grasp of some animator mechanics, we can dig right into the animation process.

Sample Animations

Remaining Idle

Unity - Remaining Idle
Remaining idle is one of the most basic animations a character has. Although they may not be doing much during this state, nearly every other animation flows from the idle state. They’ll need a different state, like running, everything grows from the idle state to achieve a running jump.

Creating a subtle and effective idle animation, like breathing, is simply a matter of manipulating your character model’s rigging throughout a few frames. If you’re successful in your animation of the idle state, you will have created a convincing, living, breathing character.

Walking

Unity - Walking
The way your character primarily moves around needs to be animated well if you’re going to have a convincing animation project.

You’re going to need to create a new file dedicated to your walk animation. You need to record each different pose that a character makes when you manipulate their limbs—think of it as like stop motion animation.

Animators move pieces into place, stop, and take pictures and splice them all together to give the appearance of action. Although this animation is more complicated, it’s more or less relatively similar.

Make sure that your walking is convincing, as it’s easy to overlook something and have your walking animation show your character entirely off the ground by accident when walking.

How To Pitch the Perfect Video Game Idea

0

How to Pitch Your Video Game Idea
Do you have an excellent idea for a game? Of course, you do!

All of those times where you played games and thought, ‘different mechanics could really improve this,’ or ‘what if we had these types of game modes and characters in a different genre?’ lead to some creative video game idea submissions.

And we will show you how to pitch a game idea and how to sell a video game idea, along with all the proper do’s and don’ts. But let’s break it down a little further before we get into details.

What Is The Pitch?

How do some fantastic ideas get through to the cutting room floor? Well, a lot of them start as nothing more than detailed pitches.

A pitch is a simple yet alluring business presentation in which an individual approaches producers and investors for potential funding for that project. It’s your way of selling the very idea of your game to video game producers.

Ideally, a pitch is short in length but packs enough of a punch to attract investors and executives into wanting to take on the project and make your dream a reality.

Can You Pitch A Video Game Idea?

Successful pitches are in nearly every field of entertainment. Although we hear about pitches in the entertainment industry, the gaming industry is no stranger to developers’ fantastic pitches.

Some of our favorite games like Diablo, Grand Theft Auto, and Silent Hill all had great pitches and have become cornerstones of gaming. Video game pitches are much like movie or TV pitches, except with software and design teams.

Will Wright, the creator of The SimCity franchise, says that asking yourself a series of questions during the pitch process will spur you onto better success:

“What got you excited? What is the key thing that’s really motivating you? And then you step back and say, OK, how can I recreate that process in that person’s head? How can I make them see or understand or feel the way I feel about this design direction??”

Can I Get In On This? How to Sell A Video Game Idea

You can. However, it doesn’t mean it’s accessible by any means. While you may feel you have a million-dollar idea, chances are many other people do as well. That’s all well and good, but what about the video game producers?

This makes their job a little more complicated, as now they have to weed through countless ideas and pitches. Many will undoubtedly be lackluster, and some better than others.

Video game executives will need to parse through the good and bad, and who can blame them for not being exactly thrilled to hear another game pitch that’s promised to be the next ‘Grand Theft Auto meets Halo plus Metroid and Zelda rolled into one’?

However, it is still possible. The critical thing to remember is that other people, namely game publishers and executives, will automatically be less impressed with your pitch idea than you are. That’s not a knock on your vision, it’s just that you’ve had this passion project bouncing around in your skull for a while, and they’re hearing it for the first time.

Coming in as an outsider is also another hurdle. If you already held a position at the company, selling a video game pitch would be more comfortable.

In short, yes. But it’s also challenging to do so without some skills and background.

Video Game Publishers

Publishers in the video game industry

What Does A Video Game Publisher Do?

You may have heard the term video game publisher. Some of the most famous and highest-earning video game publishers in history are Tencent Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Microsoft, Apple, and Activision Blizzard.

So, what does a game publisher do?

Video game publishers are publishing companies that release games. Games published by individual companies are both developed within the company or outside the company.

A good example is Blizzard. They both develop and publish their own games. No one has a monopoly on Diablo, like the creators of the game.

Video game publishers act as financial benefactors, i.e., bankrolling a game to completion and often distributing the games they publish. However, sometimes they’ll employ other companies to distribute games for them.

They also do a lot of legwork for the game studio and game. They will often deal with licensing issues, advertisement campaigns, art design for products, and even work out the proper localization, i.e., translating a game into a different language or language.

So what do game publishers do? Nearly everything aside from developing the game itself in some cases.

Why Do Game Studios Need Publishers?

As you can imagine, having the aid of a great video game publisher can make a huge difference in game development. While people can develop and publish their own games, especially in the age of Steam, having the aid of a video game publisher is crucial to the success of many games.

While on the surface, having access to more funds than some video game studios make in several years, the sheer number of other resources can be a lifesaver. After completing a costly game, the chances are that game studios don’t have the time, energy, or capital to engage in an extensive ad campaign that splashes all over different websites and TV ad spots.

This is where the video game publisher steps up and takes over.

A possible downside to this is that the video game publisher may either advertise your game differently than intended or designs the box art differently. I think it’s a small price to pay for having full funding and assistance when building your dream game.

Do I Need A Publisher For My Game?

Although it’s viable to self-publish these days, consider working with a publisher.

Some pros of self-publishing are pretty apparent right off the bat. You get all the profits, licensing, and control ad campaigns and how the game looks and feels. However, publishers can be an extremely excellent safety net.

Game Pitch Document

Video Game Pitch

What Is A Pitch Document?

A pitch document is what developers send to investors or game publishers outlining their ideas for a game. This is your key to getting your game considered for publishing by anyone. It’s not enough to say, ‘My game is a mix of GTA and Call of Duty.’

It would be best to show them what exactly your game combines two genres, what hardware it runs on, and what the AI will be like. Things that game pitch documents contain:

  • Story
  • Basic Premise
  • Demographic
  • Singleplayer or Multiplayer
  • Online
  • PC or Consoles

How Do You Write A Pitch For A Video Game?

First thing’s first: you need to know your game. There’s no use presenting a project where you don’t have a good grasp of what your game will accomplish.

Secondly, you are going to want to find your target demographic. Are you aiming to attract RPG gamers or FPS players? Knowing these two necessary pieces of information will dictate how people respond to your pitch document, as well as how streamlined the process will be.

Also, keep in mind that you are asking for a huge favor. You are saying ‘give me money to make this’, which can be a sensitive topic. Keeping that in mind, make your pitch both unique and captivating. No one wants a retread of popular gaming mechanics and genres that they’re incredibly familiar with already.

How To Pitch A Game To A Publisher

These tips should be pretty clear and straightforward. What do you need to succeed at a game pitch meeting?

Eye Contact

The best way to communicate with people is by maintaining eye contact. Connecting to people in this simple way can do a lot in your favor. Shifting your eyes down shows a lack of confidence.

Good Public Speaking Skills

I know you probably learned some of these in school, but this is where they actually come in handy. Instead of doing presentations on book reports, you’re going to have to communicate effectively with video game publishers through public speaking.

This means you need to have good eye contact, be expressive without being over the top, and confidently express your ideas. Remember, this is a passion project; show them WHY it’s a passion of yours to create this great game idea.

What Should Be In A Game Pitch?

Although we can conjure up the concept of an elevator pitch when we think of pitches, where you need to convince an executive in 30 seconds to greenlight your game, writing out and presenting game pitches is a bit more nuanced.

Video game pitches need to include all the pertinent information about the game. Basically, it needs to outline the story, characters, gameplay elements, hardware requirements, what market the game is for, and other applicable info.

When you have all of the pertinent information together, the actual pitch takes place. Ideally, you want this to last maybe 15 minutes or so. Remember, it’s all about being clear and concise. People will not want to sit and listen to you blathering on about how talented an art team is.

Sample Pitches

Here are simple yet extremely effective game pitches for some of the most famous games of all time. These titles defined genres and changed the gaming landscape for decades, much of which we are still feeling today.

Diablo

Diablo pitch
Diablo, released in 1996, was the beginning of a good run for Blizzard Entertainment. In this pitch document, written in 1994, outlines the main idea and concepts of the game that would put Blizzard on the map.

A crucial part of Blizzard’s game pitch document outlines what is missing in the then-current mid-1990s regarding computer gaming. If you want to pin down what exactly makes their pitch successful and comprehensive, you could cite any of the detailed outlines of what gameplay will be like, or how environments will look.

It is much simpler than that. In one sentence, in our opinion, seals the deal.

“Diablo fills a neglected niche in the computer game market.”

They then go on to describe the essential elements of what the game will develop into. A medieval fantasy epic that emphasizes hack and slash gameplay in a dark setting.

By outlining what they thought was missing from computer games at the time, they pulled in the interest of game publishers and investors. Cornering a particular market, even a small niche, can pay off dividends in the long run.

And for Blizzard, it clearly has. With the immense popularity of Diablo and its subsequent best-selling sequels, the pitch document and clear and concise aims and goals won the day for the developers.

Diablo is one of the most influential hack and slash, dungeon crawling adventure games in existence and easily one of the most important games in the past 30 years.

Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto pitch
Who doesn’t love Grand Theft Auto?

A controversial yet beloved game that mixes goofy humor with gritty storylines, Grand Theft Auto and its many sequels have been the go-to game for anyone who loves to explore open-world games and cause a little mayhem in the process. It’s often copied but never replicated.

Originally called ‘Race n’ Chase’ in 1995, the pitch document by DMA Design Ltd outlines a ton of helpful info aimed at programmers, designers, and producers. They originally wanted Grand Theft Auto to be an addictive multiplayer game involving car wrecks and crazy stunts.

While that has changed quite a bit, Grand Theft Auto definitely retains some of the original essences that the designers wanted.

In the pitch document, the designer’s outline:

  • Story
  • Scope
  • Setting
  • Players
  • Action
  • Objectives
  • Graphics

Along with these main pillars of what the game aims to be, they outline what data and code they sought to use, along with how the game would run on different operating systems.

Another key element to the pitch document is the timeline. An excellent timeline, littered with vital milestones for the team, gives publishers and investors a better idea of how quickly a turnaround the team can produce, and how funds are allocated and used. They had an official start date of April 4, 1995, aiming to finish on July 1, 1996. However, the developers never met any of the milestones.

It was eventually released on October 21, 1997, as Grand Theft Auto after a ton of crucial changes. Although plagued with some setbacks, the team put out a product that revolutionized gaming. We may not have recognized it in the late 1990s, but Grand Theft Auto changed what open-world games and story-driven action would mean in the medium.

This pitch document is clear, concise, informative, and well-thought-out. It’s no surprise that it was greenlit. Although they eventually changed the name to Grand Theft Auto (a MUCH better name and game, if you ask us), their original aspects remained a staple in Grand Theft Auto titles to come.

Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 pitch
Arguably one of the best survival horror titles ever created, Silent Hill 2 took what the first game did and perfected it. Graphics, gameplay, ambiance: it was all improved upon. In the pitch document itself, the main aspects within are laid out in precise detail.

Capitalizing on the success of the first Silent Hill, the developers had a bit of an advantage over those who eventually created Grand Theft Auto. The first Silent Hill was an incredibly unique survival horror experience that blended grotesque horror with psychological, mind-bending story elements that left the player immersed in a terrifying world.

The second game pits you as James Sunderland, a husband on a quest to the titular haunted town searching for his (seemingly) deceased wife. That sentence in and of itself is a fantastic pitch. Who wouldn’t want to see where that story went?

They emphasize how psychological horror will take the reins, putting the first game’s more bloody aspects on the back burner. This resulted in dark, looming, and haunting landscapes and set pieces that influenced the genre of psychological horror.

In regards to combat, the developers outright say that combat mirrors its then contemporary, Resident Evil. They differentiate it from Capcom’s title by changing the pacing of the game.

In Silent Hill 2, you could go for an extended period without ever encountering an enemy. In Resident Evil, especially the more recent titles, enemies are always right around the corner. Both concepts are terrifying in their own way.

What is Sprite Animation in Multimedia?

Sprite images are 2D bitmap graphics found in several games and other media. If you have ever played 2D games like Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and the more recent title, Octopath Traveler, you are already familiar with sprites in games.

Creating and animating sprites allows game artists and developers to control characters and objects independent of the larger scene.

Sprites can be stationary or animated, depending on their function in the larger scene or project. Video game consoles like the Commodore 64, Nintendo Famicom, and Atari systems are iconic for their game design innovation using only 2D sprite animation.

With a colorful history like that, how do you get in on the creative action?

Animating A Sprite

Sprite Animation

Let’s look at some of the basics when it comes to sprite animation.

How Do You Animate A Sprite?

Animation sprites, while some of the more simple forms of virtual art, you most likely won’t be able to pick it up on our first try.

First, we recommend that you get ahold of some sprite sheets or create your own sprite. Have an original character you’ve been meaning to animate? Now’s the time!

A sprite sheet is an outline of all of the actions you want a character to perform. If your character is running, you need to animate sprites performing each move in a single frame.

The sheet itself displays everything, and the sprite maker must choose what action to render.

The Heart of Every Sprite Sheet

Cycles and frames are the two main things that make up every sprite sheet. What you see of a sprite sheet is a bunch of frames, all aligned and ready to be animated. When someone finally puts some animation magic into their creations, those frames become cycles.

Cycles of frames are what make the sprite animation what it is.

In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, images of Link holding his sword in different positions are frames, while the action of him swinging the sword is the cycle of all of those frames put together.

Now that we know a little more about what sprite sheets are, let’s see how we transition frames in sprite animations.

Slicing Sprite Sheets

If you want to cut your sprite sheet down considerably to separate the images, it’s pretty simple to do. This is perfect for creating small gifs. There are plenty of methods and tools to slice your image, either by tile size or the number of columns and rows.

An excellent resource is the online sprite sheet cutter at EZGif.com. It also allows you to split and decompile your sprite sheets.

Coding Sprite Sheet Animations

Coding Sprite Sheet Animations

Which Command Will Show Animation for Sprite?

The ‘Next’ command. Simply type in the command ‘next’ with whatever you want to show. For example, ‘next move,’ or ‘next look.’

How Many Frames Do You Need for Sprite Animation?

It depends on who is creating the frames. If you are a rookie sprite animator, you might want to stick to a lower amount of sprites. It would be best if you accounted for frames for every action a character does. So a character could have ten walking frames, five jumping frames, and ten running frames. 24-40 frames are pretty standard.

You don’t want to overburden yourself with a ton of frames, so don’t let your animation get too busy. It also depends on how many megabytes and resolution you are working with.

Visual Effects (VFX): Past, Present, Future

Visual Effects
We see the magic of visual effects everywhere. The chances are good that some of your favorite movies or TV shows have some impressive visual effects added in.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s take a step back and see just how visual effects, or VFX, have transformed storytelling in some of our favorite mediums. Whether it’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy or the Marvel Universe, visual effects have left an indelible mark on art.

What is VFX?

Visual effects, or VFX, are effects that professionals use to create almost magical imagery to add a sense of realism to an otherwise utterly ordinary film set.

Visual Effects vs Special Effects

There also exist special effects of SFX right alongside visual effects. Things like movie special effects amount to using optical and mechanical means to create optical illusions and other desired outcomes, that are well, special.

Take, for example, the aforementioned Lord of the Rings. In the very first fifteen minutes of The Fellowship of the Ring, the wizard Gandalf seems to absolutely tower over all of the hobbits. Believe it or not, but Ian McKellan is not 8 feet tall. Instead, the filmmakers used forced perspective to give the appearance of a massive wizard compared to hobbits.

Movie special effects take place primarily on the set, where visual effects take place mainly in post-production.

Why Are Visual Effects Significant?

Visual effects are fantastic additions to any movie. They allow filmmakers to envision and execute detailed and miraculous effects, worlds, and characters that just can’t be harnessed by actors on a soundstage.

History of Effects (SFX and VFX)

Evolution of special effects

Pioneers of Movie Special Effects

If you were to guess when the first movie special effects were, when would you guess? 1930? 1915?

It turns out that the first special effects precede even the American Civil War. In 1857, Oscar Rejlander created the very first form of special effects by performing composting on images, splicing them together to make a convincing sequence of events.

Decades later, filmmaker Alfred Clark was able to simulate Mary Queen of Scots’ execution by having the actress put her head under the headsman’s ax and stopping the film. The actress then (thankfully) left the scene while everyone remained in place.

A dummy was put under the ax, and filming resumed. This stop motion trick made it seem realistic, especially for audiences who could never dream of such a striking effect occurring before their very eyes.

Special Effects in Modern Times

What we have now in terms of movie special effects is nothing short of miraculous. Filmmakers can film entire movies using the magic of green and blue screens, practical effects, prosthetics, and more. This is efficient in scouting for filming locations, but it can cut down work time significantly.

2019’s extremely popular Avengers: Endgame was almost entirely made up of impressive visual effects, including filming on green screens. This allows actors to focus on acting and making it seem that they’re actually on a war-torn battlefield instead of physically creating such a place.

What is VFX Used For in A Film?

How VFX is used in film

Basic Uses for VFX

VFX’s primary uses in movies are for filmmakers to add impressive and downright impossible aspects to their films. Without special effects, you definitely wouldn’t have some of the most impressive visual elements of the most popular movies like Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Matrix.

Although it would be great if Neo could actually fly through the air, it just isn’t possible, sorry!

What Are Some Advanced VFX Uses?

Once you get familiar with the effectiveness of basic VFX like green screens and prosthetic makeup, it’s time to move onto the more complicated forms of special effects.

Things like CGI aren’t just conjured up in a computer program overnight. Creating compelling and believable CGI is a long and sometimes arduous process where experts create hyper-realistic images to fit into the movie’s style (or maybe a little goofy, in the case of Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars Episode I).

If the entire film or scene requires 100% CGI, then it’s a little simpler. However, if CGI takes up 50% of the scene, the CGI artists have some more complicated work ahead of them. They have to account for the movement of actors, lighting, and more.

VFX vs. CGI

What is CGI?
While it may seem that these two are similar, and indeed they share similar properties, there’s a world of difference between what is VFX and CGI.

VFX, as you now know, are visual effects. These are things added after filming that just weren’t possible during the actual filming process.

Where VFX takes existing footage of a scene and modifies it, computer-generated images are completely fabricated all the way through. You may be more familiar with CGI when watching movies in the Star Wars franchise. Many characters, locations, and objects are direct CGI implemented by the filmmakers.

Before the widespread use of CGI, scenes in Star Wars and other films were actually hand-painted. CGI improved the quality and quantity of available backdrops, locations, and characters.

However, CGI is not without its detractors. Some people prefer matte paintings, along with practical special effects. Regardless of opinion, CGI was a welcomed addition to the world of movie special effects.

Types of Special Effects in Movies

There are multiple types of movie special effects. Here are but a few popular uses for movie special effects.

Matte Painting

Matte painting - Alfred Junge
We had mentioned matte painting before, but why was it so popular in movie special effects? If an artist working on a film paints an impressive matte painting of a background, it can transform the measly soundstage in Hollywood to a far off planet or remote Tibetan mountainscape.

In the film Black Narcissus, nuns try to establish themselves in a Himalayan valley. While the director could have filmed in the Himalayas, it probably would have been more trouble than it was worth.

Instead, they employed matte paintings from Alfred Junge. Alfred Junge painted the stunning landscapes found in the finished film. He even won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction. After seeing Alfred Junge’s work, you can see how valuable a masterful matte painting can be.

Digital Compositing

VFX - digital compositing
This is the practice of taking multiple images and splicing them together to make a completely unique image. It allows for numerous impressive aspects of special effects to blend together for a cohesive whole. Designers will take a base image and put objects, characters, or other locations into the frame.

Stop Motion Animation

Stop Motion
Any old school fans of Gumby or Coraline will know precisely what stop-motion animation is. Designers will take puppets or figures and pose them in different positions while taking pictures of them in these different positions. What results is the fantastic illusion that these characters are alive.

Prosthetics

Prosthetics
This is where actors and characters wear different figure-altering protheses. In Planet of the Apes, actors applied detailed makeup and prosthetics to give the uncanny illusion that apes could function and interact identically to humans.

These are some of the most timeless and significant movie special effects that paved the way for more complicated procedures.

Chroma Key

Chroma Key
For many moviegoers, this might be the most widespread one. However, it’s also somehow the most subtle. A good designer, much like a matte painter, can effortlessly pull moviegoers into the fictional world they’ve designed.

People act out their scenes in front of green and blue screens, with effects applied in post-production. A bit of digital compositing is involved and blends multiple special effects techniques together for a more cohesive scene or film.

VFX Techniques

Here are some unique VFX techniques that filmmakers use to bring fantasy worlds to life.

Bullet Time

Bullet time - Matrix
Those familiar with the Matrix series of movies will instantly recognize the miraculous scenes in which various characters participate in superhuman gunplay. Bullets go in slow motion, or outright stop their trajectory. This effect allows filmmakers to emphasize the minute details of the action, illustrating how complex and nuanced a scene is.

For a stretch in the early to mid-2000s, bullet time was a favorite technique found and period in movies, ads, TV shows, and video games.

Doubling

Doubling - parent trap
Anyone who has watched the Parent Trap or other movies involving twins or clones already knows the act of doubling. This is where an actor (who doesn’t have twins or clones….or maybe they do) is filmed in two different locations separately and has the footage spliced together, giving the effect of two distinct people.

This adds an exciting dynamic to filming, as an actor who has been doubled needs to then act like they have another actor on set and even interacts with their fictional counterpart.

How to Make Special Effects

Mechanical Effects - Inception

Live Special Effects

Now, these are fascinating. Live special effects take place in front of a live audience. How can actors and productions effectively entrance an audience in real-time?

There are a few famous examples, like laser light shows and fog machines. While simple, these visual effects attempt to immerse an audience in whatever they’re experiencing in person.

An incredibly popular live special effect is pyrotechnics, the use of fire to dazzle live audiences. This is wildly popular with over the top bands like KISS, who make live special effects a cornerstone of their performances.

Ever been to a celebration in which confetti is used? You have experienced a live special effect.

Mechanical Effects

Mechanical effects are what you would typically see in something like an action movie. In these cases, teams of mechanical engineers build rigs to act out a scene.

If a movie character is in an airplane crashing, the airplane’s mechanical rigs will simulate violent turbulence and give the appearance of an actual plane crash. Professionals use things like gimbals to achieve this result.

In Inception, Christopher Nolan had an entire mechanical hallway crafted to have actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt act out the impressive action sequence.

Movie Scenes Before and After Special Effects

Now let’s have some fun examining what some of your favorite movie scenes looked like before and after the implementation of special effects.

Man of Steel (2013)

Man of Steel (2013) vfx
We know that Henry Cavill in Man of Steel didn’t actually fly, (or did he?). This image shows how he achieved the iconic flight of Superman, using wires and a green screen. They even added Superman’s cape in post-production.

The Life of Pi (2012)

The Life of Pi (2012) vfx
Sorry to break it to you, but the tiger in The Life of Pi wasn’t real. Instead, a stand-in was used and the tiger special effects were added in post-production.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest (2006) vfx
The special effects department deserves some serious praise for making Bill Nighy turn into the fearsome Davy Jones. Although the film is over a decade old, this is still some of the most impressive special effects we’ve seen.

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) vfx
Although it may seem like James Franco is being violently thrown about on a river, he was actually just stationary on a soundstage. Not so great and powerful, if you ask me.

The Dark Knight (2008)

The Dark Knight (2008) vfx
The gruesome effects applied to Aaron Eckhart’s face in The Dark Knight made you believe he was Two-Face. However, it was just the miracle of special effects magic.

Final Thoughts on VFX

Hailing from years gone by, VFX and SFX have been a cornerstone of filmmaking for over a century and counting. While some may criticize what they feel is an overuse of special effects in movies, they are so intertwined in efficient and creative movie-making that to criticize special effects would be criticizing movies themselves.

Whatever your position on special effects in movies, they are undoubtedly a huge benefit towards the filmmaking process, and will only increase in complexity and technological prowess.

Video Games Drawing

What It Means to Draw Video Games

If you’re reading this, chances are, you are of the camp that believes video games are art (they are!). To prove our point, we’ll tell you about how video game art has some striking parallels with the world of traditional and classical art.

While game graphics and art have only been around as we know them for several decades, they have advanced to an impressive level, almost to the point of not meaningfully improving in the coming years. While the new systems are just around the corner, what will their graphic and art capabilities be, especially at the end of their cycle?

Where classical art evolved from cave drawings to the fantastic works of Monet and Van Gogh over the centuries, hardware has allowed game developers to kick game drawing and design into hyperdrive.

While video game graphics may soon experience a plateau in graphical capability, it has never been better to learn how to draw video game characters.

Design Questions That Give Your Creations Life

Creating a character can be pretty straightforward some of the time. You can create a generic space marine character, and his only motivation is destroying alien menaces. However, what if your character belongs in an RPG and needs some backstory.

Those who are familiar with Dungeons & Dragons will know the process of building a character’s backstory. Knowing how to draw video game characters also means you know how to ask questions of your characters:

Where were they born?

What did their parents do?

Are they impulsive, calm, or quick to anger?

While these questions aren’t necessary, it can make your video game character drawings more nuanced and exciting.

How Do You Create A Character Question?

Creating a character question is as easy as asking, ‘what’s your name?’ These can be pretty basic questions (or more complicated ones) that flesh out your character’s background and personality.

What Are Some Questions to Ask When Establishing A Character?

Some excellent character design questions are:

  • Where are you from?
  • Do you have siblings?
  • Would you take a bullet for friends?
  • What is your favorite food?
  • What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you?
  • How did your childhood experiences mold you into the character you are?

What Is A Character Question?

Character questions are personal questions that you formulate regarding your character and personality.

If it helps, imagine a character like Cloud from Final Fantasy answering questions about his life. You can get a better idea of his personality and background from them. A set of character questions map out the life of your character.

What Should I Know About My Character?

To create compelling characters, you need to know them. By being an expert in your character’s backstory, motivations, wants, and needs, you can bring an expert level of design to your proposed character.

It’s better to ask character questions and create a comprehensive, multifaceted, and nuanced character than just having a one-dimensional character. No one likes those.

How to Draw Video Game Characters

Video Game Character
Before we get further into how to draw video game characters, let’s look at some character design that has influenced video games.

Comics

Comic book styles have evolved over the years. While the essence of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee has never truly left comic book drawing, new crops of artists have brought their unique spin to classical formulas.

Cartoon Characters

Chances are, cartoons played a considerable part in your childhood development. They probably even influenced the way you look at art. Characters like Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, and more paved the way for what animation means in the 21st century.

What is the Easiest Cartoon Character to Draw?

Some of the most commonly easy characters to draw are beloved figureheads of animation like Bugs Bunny, Peter Griffin, and notorious troublemaker Bart Simpson.

A Note on Concept Art

Video game drawings have never prospered more than from the talents of skilled concept artists. Concept art is a branch of a video game’s art department. The concept artist or artists take the concept of a game or work and give ideas life.

Some of the most famous pieces of concept art are works by Yoji Shinkawa, the extremely talented artist behind the stunning and gritty concept art of Metal Gear Solid.
Metal Gear Solid drawing
All of our favorite video games have iconic character drawings and concept art. Concert artists also have to ask themselves game character questions when detailing the works of others. Concept art is some of the highest art within video games outside of the actual graphical capability of the game itself.

Let’s take a look at some solid video tutorials.

The Power of Experience: The Wonders of Video Game Immersion

0

What is Game Immersion
It’s a night like any other. You have nothing to do, so you decide to fire up your console (or PC) of choice. You choose an open-world game that you hear great reviews about. It was advertised as having excellent ‘game immersion.’ Okay, sounds good.

Next thing you know, it’s 3 in the morning. Where did the time go? What seems like minutes has been hours. You’ve just experienced the wonders of video game immersion.

What is Immersion in Gaming?

You may have heard the term ‘video game immersion’ or its derivatives are thrown about when seeing ads or reviews for games.

“This is one of the most immersive games in a decade!”

Or

“Video game immersion doesn’t get much more real than this!”

But what does that mean exactly? It turns out that there are actually some psychological aspects to getting drawn into a game’s rich and detailed world.

Immersion

Immersion

What is ‘Immersion’ in Psychology?

Immersion in video games is more than just enjoying a game’s story, HUD, graphics, etc. It’s a psychological phenomenon that happens when your brain goes into a different state.

“Immersion is a process of temporarily expanding consciousness into areas of the unconscious—something like hypnosis, but retaining consciousness as one does in lucid dreaming states.”

Video game immersion brings you out of the ‘real world’ and transports you and your brain into a different reality. If you have ever spent hours on hours in a game like The Witcher 3, you’ll know exactly what we mean.

How Do You Get Immersed in Video Games?

Everyone is different when it comes to video game immersion. Some gamers are more easily drawn in by good graphics. Other players are immersed in a realistic game world. It depends on your personal preference in games to determine what will be immersive gaming for you.

Flow

Flow

What is Game Flow?

We once again enter the realm of psychology to explain what flow is. Flow is the game’s basic structure, its rewards, and motives that drive the player onward. This could be done in terms of story elements unfolding, earning a trophy or achievement, and other aspects that motivate players to keep playing.

The game flow sets the pace of a game. Good pacing usually equals more positively received and immersive video games.

Flow and Immersion

Both game flow and game immersion are vital facets of a game’s design. While you technically don’t need to have immersion, it is strongly suggested to have a good game flow. Good video game immersion is an added bonus.

Flow affects the pacing, motivations, and other aspects of the player’s experience more directly. Which one do you prefer? A good game flow or great video game immersion?

Elements That Make or Break Game Flow

Rewards

This is what we are all working towards in games. Adequate game flow sets rewards and clear objectives for players to follow and complete. It’s a delicate balance to achieve, as individual players might be more willing to deal with slower pacing for more significant rewards. Others might have a lower tolerance for more dense game flows.

Clear Goals

Along with rewards, this is probably the most essential part of a successful game flow. If you don’t set clear objectives, players will often get lost, distracted, or even lose interest in the overarching narrative or gameplay.

Setting goals, especially in an open world, is beneficial, and giving players the options to either complete them or not on their own time schedule can bring together both game immersion and game flow.

The player controls the situation and the activity

In The Witcher 3, the player is not bound by any concrete barrier to play the game how and when they want. Aside from venturing into game areas where they need to be higher levels, nothing constricts their movement or ability to play. The day and night cycle, weather, and more don’t affect a player’s control of Geralt and his journey. The story can be placed on hold indefinitely if the player wishes.

This is the key to significant game flows and immersive games. Players want to control. It’s partly why they play immersive games.

Expand the Game Flow

This is a little tricky. If you break a game’s flow, players will most likely experience boredom and lose motivation for completing it. This is why you need to find a balance between a player’s skill and your game’s challenge. If the player’s skill is too low for the current challenge, some players might be discouraged from continuing.

Some more casual players might not find it easy to complete some immersive game actions that other players have no problem with. It’s all about accommodation for every player and their skill set.

What Choices Mean for Game Flow

We all love some excellent choices that seemingly affect a game’s narrative arc or ending. Offering choices, whether meaningful or trivial, will keep gamers safely in the game’s flow.

The Witcher 3 does a fantastic job of having players choose nearly every dialogue option Geralt has with both major and minor characters. Having endless choices, even in minor conversations, keeps the player hooked in some fashion.

What Are Some Of The Most Immersive Games?

Immersive Games
Now that we know a little more about what immersion in video games entails let’s look at some of the most notable games on the market that transport you to a completely different world.

What is an immersive game?

Immersive games are video games that pull you into their worlds, either through realism, scope, or good gameplay.

How do I make my game more immersive?

Video game immersion is all about drawing players into your world. This means having aspects like a real, believable open world, great graphics, and other quality aspects.

Immersive gaming doesn’t need an open world to be immersive by any stretch. It helps, sure, but as long as you have captivating parts of your game that can draw a player’s attention, you can craft the perfect video game immersion.

What is the most realistic open-world game?

Red Dead Redemption 2 stresses the need for game immersion with its fantastic graphics, realistic physics, and tone that sets the stage for one of, if not the most immersive game.
